These data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base. The data set was not and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations, such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor. Although useful in a GIS as a reference base layer for maps, the data set has no legal basis in the definition of boundaries or property lines.

Chlorine content increases with depth, and the contour
lines were drawn to indicate a general trend of increasing
chlorine concentration in the seam toward the deep interior
of the Illinois Basin. Because the number of coal samples is
limited and the chlorine content in coal varies even in a
small area (depending on local geologic conditions), chlorine
concentration in coal from a local area cannot be accurately
predicted from the map. Data are lacking from a large
portion of the basin and areas in the northern and eastern
parts of the map contain large uncertainty (see Figure 2,
ISGS Reprint 1991-N, dashed contour lines indicate large
uncertainty).
Data were originally contoured by hand. The contours
were later transferred to a paper map at approximately
1:2000000 scale, and digitized. -cpk
