Chlorine content increases with depth, and the contour lines were drawn to indicate a general trend of increasing chlorine concentration in the seam toward the deep interior of the Illinois Basin. Because the number of coal samples is limited and the chlorine content in coal varies even in a small area (depending on local geologic conditions), chlorine concentration in coal from a local area cannot be accurately predicted from the map. Data are lacking from a large portion of the basin and areas in the northern and eastern parts of the map contain large uncertainty (see Figure 2, ISGS Reprint 1991-N, dashed contour lines indicate large uncertainty). Data were originally contoured by hand.
