Approximately 3,500 face channel, composite face channel, and drill core samples were used. In the Illinois Basin, rank changes systematically with distribution and depth of the seam, and rank isolines tend to parallel geologic structures. Geologic structures were used to continue the trend of rank isolines across areas of limited control. Data were contoured by hand and the contours were digitized. Heat content was calculated as million Btu/short ton. The 23- and 25-million Btu-per-ton contours correspond closely to the B/C and A/B rank group boundaries, respectively.
