This datafile shows a highly generalized depth to the top of the Jamestown Coal in Illinois. These 100-foot contours were created by Earthvision software using data from drill holes. Because the depth of the coal was contoured directly from drill hole data (as opposed to creating a map of coal elevation and subtracting it from a map of surface topography) the resulting map is essentially based on the assumption that the land surface is a level plain. Consequently, the accuracy of the map is lowest where the coal is shallowest. This data set is intended for use at a scale of 1:750,000.
This data set was created as part of the ISGS GIS database to show general depth of the Jamestown Coal seam. The data are appropriate for regional analysis.
<purpose>
These data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base. The data set was not and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations, such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor. Although useful in a GIS as a reference base layer for maps, the data set has no legal basis in the definition of boundaries or property lines.

The attributes of the original ArcInfo coverage were reviewed in 2000
by visual inspection of the contours for depth anomolies and
comparison with earlier depth maps. Original point-source data
associated with anomolies were checked for accuracy of
location and correlation. These reviews were performed in an
iterative fashion.
Accuracy of point-source information is variable, depending
on the source materials and the geologist. Some logs are
precise measurements of thickness and depth, others may have
errors or be rounded. Geologic correlations are, of course,
open to other interpretations. In general: measurements from
core descriptions and coal test geophysical logs are accurate
to within fractions of an inch; measurements from drillers
logs may be accurate to within an inch to 5 feet, depending
on the equipment used and the experience of the on-site geologist;
measurements from oil test geophysical logs are accurate to
within +/- one foot.
Formal evaluation tests have not been run, but daily
hands-on experience using the data for real-life
applications has proven the quality of the point-source database.
Experience suggests that less than 1% of the data contain
errors that involve gross mis-location of points or
mis-correlation of coals.
This map did not make use of all available point-source data.
This map was created to depict broad regional trends in depth
of the coal. Contours were created directly from point-source
data on coal depth with no consideration given to local or
regional topography. This method assumes that the land
surface is a level plain. Given that surface elevation in
Illinois rarely varies by more than 100 feet (and commonly
less than 50 feet) over short distances, this method results
in a reasonably accurate regional depiction of coal depth.
The greatest inaccuracies are where the coal is less than
200 feet deep.

The point-source data was compiled by ISGS staff for various projects
(primarily related to coal resources, structure, and mining
geology) dating back to 1938. This subset was compiled for
and is available from the USGS's National Coal Resources Data
System. No attempt has been made to compile all available
data. This file does not represent all the well records on
file at the ISGS, nor should the absence of data for one or
more coals for a specific data point be interpreted to mean
that those coals are not present.

This is a generalized depiction of regional ground condition.
Horizontal positional accuracy of the original point-source
data is generally unknown. There is considerable variability
depending on the source material. Some holes have surveyed
locations and are accurate to within a foot, others have only
description to the nearest forty acres. Overall, the database
administrator estimates that most points are within 500 feet of
their correct locations, but no scientific tests have been done
to verify this.

Post-contouring Processing
1. The modified Earthvision grid was exported to an Arc line
coverage and clipped using the outcrop of the Springfield Coal.
2. The Springfield outcrop arcs were copied into the coverage.
3. Items for the .PAT and the .AAT files were added
to the coverage. The .PAT items were:
depth_spring 8 8 N 2
The .AAT items were:
depth_spring 8 8 N 2
4. The line coverage was converted to a polygon coverage by
automatically assigning the average value of bounding lines
to each polygon (e.g. if a polygon was bounded by a 400 ft and
500 ft isoline, the polygon was assigned the value of 450 ft).
Peak and valley polygons were assigned a value of plus or minus
50 ft of the bounding polygon (e.g. if a peak polygon was surrounded
by a 500 ft isoline, the polygon was assigned a value of 550 ft).
The polygon bounded by the 200 foot contour and the coal crop was
assigned a value of 175 feet.
5. Polygons less than 250 million square feet in area were
considered to be artifacts of processing unsupported by the
grid size used to contour the point-source data. These polygons
were eliminated using the Arc eliminate command.

Attribute items are in typical ARC/INFO feature class format.
User-defined attributes are:
Polygon attributes:
DEPTH-JTOWN - Average depth of the top of the Jamestown
Coal within the polygon. The contour interval is 100
feet and polygon boundary lines represent these contours
(e.g. 300, 400, 500, etc.)
Actual polygon values (e.g. 350, 450, etc.) reflect the
average coal depth within the polygon, as based on the bounding
contours.
