<abstract>The western part of the Gulf Coast coal-bearing region is part of the Gulf Coast area that was selected for assessment by the National Coal Resource Assessment project. The geologic faults of western part of the Gulf Coast coal-bearing region was digitized so that we could use the geology and geologic structures as a guide to help delineate the near-surface coal-bearing regions of the area.</abstract>
<purpose>The purpose of digitizing the geologic map was to allow us to have a geologic base on which to tie stratigraphic and structural correlations of coal beds and coal-bearing strata. Geologic features are shown on the the map to show their proximity to the near-surface coal-bearing areas.</purpose>

The geologic attributes are combinations of those used
on the original geologic source map. The assumption
was made that the original geologic features were
500000, and that the original geologic attributions on the
source map were correct.

geologic source map and checked for errors, and the
errors were corrected in the digital file using ArcEdit.

The geologic features of the entire coal-bearing region of

<procdesc>The original geologic features and a series of latitude-longitude points of the source maps were scanned by a USGS contractor (Geologic Data Systems, Inc., Denver, CO) using a large-format scanner to produce an image file. The image files were converted into an Arc Grid, and then into an Arc Vector coverages. The coverages were then transformed into a world geographic projection. Geologic polygons were attributed with a scheme to follow that on the source maps. Once the completed Arc coverages arrived at the USGS from the contractor,
project staff edited the coverages using ArcEdit, so that a uniform geologic nomenclature would exist across the region, and so that the coverage would follow USGS digital map standards. The data was originally published by the Bureau of Economic Geology, The University of Texas at Austin as Miscellaneous Maps 41, 2 sheets 1:500,000. The data were extracted from that publication and reproduced here.
