<idAbs>This datafile shows the general elevation of the top of the Colchester Coal in Illinois. These 25-foot isolines were contoured by Earthvision software using over 9,800 data points from the ISGS Coal Section stratigraphic database. The data was contoured using fault lines for control and manual adjustments were made to the contours to reflect the presence of known faults. This data set is intended for use at a scale of 1:100,000.</idAbs>
<idPurp>This data set was created as part of the ISGS GIS database to show the general elevation of the Colchester Coal seam. These data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base. The data set was originally created for the purpose of producing maps of well locations in Illinois for geologic research by the ISGS and others. It serves as an important base cartographic element for many types of maps and has been widely distributed and used outside the ISGS. The data set was not and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations, such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor. Although useful in a GIS as a reference base layer for maps, the data set has no legal basis in the definition of boundaries or property lines.</idPurp>

<measDesc>The attributes of the original ArcInfo coverage were reviewed in 2009 by visual inspection of the contours for elevation anomalies and comparison with earlier published structure maps. Original point-source data associated with anomalies were checked for accuracy of location, correlation, and reporting of surface and bed elevation. These reviews were performed in an iterative fashion by two or three individuals. There are no arc or polygon attribute values outside the appropriate value domains. Accuracy of point-source information is variable, depending on the source materials and the geologist. Some logs are precise measurements of thickness and depth, others may have errors or be rounded. Geologic correlations are, of course, open to other interpretations. In general: measurements from core descriptions and coal test geophysical logs are accurate to within fractions of an inch; measurements from drillers logs may be accurate to within an inch to 5 feet, depending on the equipment used and the experience of the on-site geologist; measurements from oil test geophysical logs are accurate to within +/- one foot. Formal evaluation tests have not been run, but daily hands-on experience using the data for real-life applications has proven the quality of the database. Experience suggests that less than 1% of the data contain errors that involve gross mis-location of points or mis-correlation of coals. This map did not make use of all available point-source data, but traces of previously mapped faults were used to control or modify contours. The fault traces were obtained from maps in ISGS Circulars 509, 513, 522, Report of Investigations 172, and from data provided by the Indiana Geological Survey. Small or minor fault traces that lie close to each other or to major fault lines (within approximately 1000 feet) may have been removed from the Earthvision contouring process and/or may not be shown. Faults were assumed to be vertical in the contouring process.</measDesc>

<measDesc>This is a generalized depiction of regional ground condition. Horizontal positional accuracy of the original point-source data is generally unknown. There is considerable variability depending on the source material. Some holes have surveyed locations and are accurate to within a foot, others have only description to the nearest forty acres. Overall, the database administrator estimates that most points are within 500 feet of their correct locations, but no scientific tests have been done to verify this.</measDesc>
