This map was created as part of the National Coal Resource Assessment being conducted by the USGS.
<purpose>
These data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base. The data set was not and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations, such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor. Although useful in a GIS as a reference base layer for maps, the data set has no legal basis in the definition of boundaries or property lines.

Polygon and chain-node topology is present. The coverage was
checked for complete chain-node topology (no dangling arcs,
except where appropriate), polygon labels (one per polygon, except
for universal polygon), correct regions topology, boundary values
appropriate for map projection and map units, and appropriate
"fuzzy" tolerances. There are no known arc, polygon or region
attribute values outside the appropriate value domains.

The coal crop was updated from previous mapping in selected areas as
a function of coal resource coverage updates. Where Coal Section coal
resource county coverages were updated and sufficient new information
was available, areas near the known crop of the the coal were further
studied. An Earthvision grid of the elevation of the coal was compared
with the elevation of the bedrock, and where these two grids intersected
was delineated as the crop of the coal. Any discrepancies were compared
to the original source paper map, mylar separate, or previous coverage.

This is a generalized depiction of regional ground condition.
Horizontal positional accuracy was verified by manual overlay of
source and hard-copy plots. Arcs within line-width of source maps
are deemed acceptable. For positional accuracy of source maps,
