The coals are not mapped to the west and northwest of the counties presented here, and they merge together north and east of this area into the Seelyville Coal. This map was created as part of the National Coal Resource Assessment being conducted by the USGS. Updates were made to 5 counties as part of a coal availability assessment, 2002. These data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base. The data set was not and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations, such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor. ESRI ArcCatalog 9.2.2.1350 Shapefile Coal thickness isopachs were updated for Gallatin and Saline counties in 1996, and for Hamilton, White, Wayne, Edwards, and Wabash counties in 2001. The updated resource coverages were used for these counties. Accuracy of this compilation is dependent on the locational and measurement accuracy of the original data points, the distribution of data points, the local variability of the coal seam and other factors. Polygon and chain-node topology is present. The coverage was checked for complete chain-node topology (no dangling arcs, except where appropriate), polygon labels (one per polygon, except for universal polygon), correct regions topology, boundary values appropriate for map projection and map units, and appropriate "fuzzy" tolerances. There are no known arc, polygon or region attribute values outside the appropriate value domains. In areas of limited data, boundaries have been generalized using section lines and/or county boundaries. This is a generalized depiction of regional ground condition. Horizontal positional accuracy was verified by manual overlay of source and hard-copy plots. Arcs within line-width of source maps are deemed acceptable.
