<abstract>This report by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), of the Powder River Basin (PRB) of Montana and Wyoming is part of the U.S. Coal Resources and Reserves Assessment Project. Essential to that project was the creation of a comprehensive drill hole database that was used for coal bed correlation and for coal resource and reserve assessments in the PRB. This drill hole database was assembled using data from the USGS National Coal Resources Data System, several other Federal and State agencies, and selected mining companies. Additionally, USGS personnel manually entered lithologic picks into the database from geophysical logs of oil, gas, and coalbed methane wells. Of the 29,928 drill holes processed, records of 21,393 are in the public domain and are included in this report. The database contains location information, lithology, and coal bed names for each drill hole.</abstract>
<purpose>Generalized geology of the Powder River Basin has been previously published as a GIS shapefile. However, more detail has become available for portions of the basin than had been shown in the older maps. An updated geodatabase of the Tertiary geology of the Powder River Basin that differentiates the members of the Fort Union Formation in Montana as well as Wyoming was needed for the recent USGS reassessments of coal resources in the basin.</purpose>

<procdesc>The Montana geology was spliced together from the following nine 30 x 60 minute digital quadrangle maps: Birney, Broadus, Forsyth, Hardin, Hysham, Lame Deer, Lodge Grass, Miles City, and Powderville. The digital maps (polygon coverages) were downloaded from the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) website - http://www.mbmg.mtech.edu/gis/gis-datalinks.asp. The nine polygon coverages were merged into one coverage and slivers resulting from the merge process were eliminated. The coverages downloaded from the MBMG website were in the UTM projection (zone 13, NAD 27) and the merged coverage was kept the same. Individual shapefiles were then created from the merged coverage that represented the following geologic Members of the Fort Union Formation: Tongue River, Lebo, and Tullock.
The Wyoming geology and the Quaternary geology of the Montana portion of the Powder River Basin (PRB) was obtained in digital form as a shapefile (Prbgeol.shp, Geographic coordinate system, NAD 27) from USGS Professional Paper 1625-A, disc 2. The shapefile was converted to the UTM projection (zone 13, NAD 27) and then individual shapefiles were created that represented the following geologic units: Quaternary deposits, White River Formation, Wasatch Formation, and the Member units of the Fort Union Formation.
The geologic units and designations were checked against the geology as shown in a paper copy of USGS Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map I-2298 and changes were made to the shapefiles where there were major differences in geologic contacts or designations.
The shapefiles that represented the same geologic units in both Montana and Wyoming were merged into single basin shapefiles and then the eight final geology shapefiles were merged into a single basin geology shapefile. That PRB geology shapefile was converted to a file geodatabase feature class with the following coordinate system: Geographic, NAD 83.</procdesc>
