Description:
Abstract: Outlines of areas mined for the Herrin Coal in Illinois. Updated underground mine outlines as of January 1, 2012 and surface mine outlines as of June 30, 2011 are included. As of July 2012, 4 surface mines and 13 underground mines are mining the Herrin Coal. Information was extracted from company mine maps, DNR surface mine shapefile, and NAIP Digital Ortho Photo Images. This information was extracted from detailed coal mine data stored in the ISGS Coal Section library database. Lines delineate the approximate outer boundary of individual mines (if known) or general mined areas. Interior mine boundaries such as pillars or small blocks of unmined coal are commonly not depicted. Outlines have been compiled from a variety of sources. Outlines of areas mined before 1987 are commonly from source maps at scales of 1:62,500 or smaller. Outlines of areas mined since 1987 are commonly digitized at scales ranging from 1:4800 to 1:12,000. Mines whose extent is not known or which only mined a few acres are not included in this coverage. Additional information is available from the Coal Section of the Illinois State Geological Survey. Mine outlines from completed Coal Mine Quadrangle Studies were included in this feature class if applicable. An ongoing study, the detailed Coal Mine Quadrangle maps depict the best-known position of mine boundaries with respect to individual properties as located on a USGS topographic map image base. For a list of completed quadrangles please visit the ISGS Coal Section website or contact the Coal Section. This datafile was compiled and updated in 2012 in order to provide a current, state-wide data set showing surface and underground coal mines of the Herrin Coal. Due to the wide range of source map scales, these data are suitable for regional applications only at the 1:100,000 scale or smaller.
Purpose: These data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base. The data set was originally created for the purpose of producing maps of well locations in Illinois for geologic research by the ISGS and others. It serves as an important base cartographic element for many types of maps and has been widely distributed and used outside the ISGS. The data set was not and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations, such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor. Although useful in a GIS as a reference base layer for maps, the data set has no legal basis in the definition of boundaries or property lines.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report: Attributes in this coverage are accurate with respect to the source data library. Contact the ISGS Coal Section for information regarding the accuracy of the source data library.
Logical Consistency Report: Polygon and chain-node topology is present. The coverage was checked for complete chain-node topology (no dangling arcs, except where appropriate), polygon labels (one per polygon, except for universal polygon), boundary values appropriate for map projection and map units, and appropriate "fuzzy" tolerances. There are no known arc or polygon attribute values outside the appropriate value domains.
Completeness Report: This data set does not represent a complete collection of the location of mine shafts, slopes, and other openings. Lines delineate the approximate outer boundary of individual mines (if known) or general mined areas. Interior mine boundaries such as pillars or small blocks of unmined coal are commonly not depicted. Mines whose extent is not known or which only mined a few acres are not included in this coverage. Not all the attribute data available for these coal mine locations are included in this coverage. For more detailed information contact the Coal Section of the Illinois State Geological Survey.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: Horizontal positional accuracy is verified by visual comparison of source and hard copy plots. The source materials used are commonly paper copies (ozalid or hand traces) or microfilm prints of original mine maps supplied by mining companies or other parties. ISGS staff have not verified the accuracy or validity of the original source material. Some original maps are not drawn on a cartographic base. Due to the physical and cartographic quality of the source materials used, horizontal positions may be in error by 500 feet or more. For applications requiring precise horizontal accuracy, the original source maps should be consulted.

Process Step:
Process Description: Outlines for mines active in the Herrin Coal were added to source files to produce this coverage. Paper maps, digital ArcGIS shapefile from the Il Office of Mines and Minerals, and NAIP Digital Ortho Photo Images were used to update the mine outlines.
Process Step:
Process Description: Mine outlines from completed Quadrangle Coal Mine Studies were included in this feature class if applicable. For a list of completed Quadrangle Coal Mine Studies please visit our website.
Process Step:
Process Description: These data are stored in county by county tiles in the ISGS Coal Section GIS database. To prepare this statewide map, coal mine outlines from all county tiles containing this theme were joined. Much labor was expended checking "coal type" vs. mine polygons in the library coverages (e.g. coal type = "mined" vs. mined-area polygons) these were not always equivalent, and the pattern was not consistent from county to county. The best, or most reasonable outlines, were chosen for each county. -c.korose

Process Step:
Process Description: Coverage was dissolved to remove internal county lines from the individual mines, resulting in coverage m2660py to be consistent with coverages in separate county directories.
