In 2014 a set of geologic maps of the United States were created displaying the location of major formations for salt deposits, sedimentary basins, major oil and gas fields, and hard rock outcrops that could be used for subsurface hydrogen storage (Lord et al. 2014; Figure 2). The maps only covered the contiguous states. This polygon data set represents an update to these maps with any updated geologic information and to include the states of Alaska and Hawaii.

Lord, A.S., Kobos, P.H., and D.J. Borns.  2014.  Geologic storage of hydrogen: Scaling up to meet city transportation demands, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy 39 (2014), pp. 15570-15582. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ijhydene.2014.07.121

These polygons representing salt formations of the United States include both bedded and domal salts, with domal salts being prevalent along the Gulf Coast region. There are no substantial updates to the 2014 maps for the 48 contiguous states. There are no salt formations in Alaska or Hawaii.
